Now please think. Peter is a man. He has a mind and he can think. No sooner he wakes up early in the morning than he starts thinking, and his thinking continues till he goes to bed and sleeps. This clearly means that Peter’s mind works only when he is awake. In other words Peter’s mind is absent when he is in the sleep. So the mind exists only when one is awake otherwise the mind is defunct or ceases its existence. It is recreated after the sleep is over.
Peter has a body but Peter is not the body. Peter has a mind but Peter is not the mind, because Peter himself gets up in the morning without being prompted or asked by the body or the mind. Peter is surely different from his body and his mind. He asks his body and mind to wake up. Peter is different, because he gets his work done from his brain, body and mind.
Then, who is Peter? In fact, Peter or “I” is a soul. Which is invisible but omnipresent and omniscient? This soul is everything and all the things. This can’t be limited by any definition. Soul can’t be described in words because words themselves are derived from the soul. Everything is derived and begotten of soul; body organs, power of mind, power of thinking, power of speaking, power of inhaling, power of hearing, power of moving and everything in the universe. Everything in the universe is created out of soul. Like earrings, necklaces, bangles, etc. are the different names and shapes, but ultimately, everything is gold. The universe emerges out of soul and again gets dissolved in the soul. Like trillions of tides are created from the ocean and ultimately become one with the ocean or merge in the ocean, trillions of living and nonliving things are created out of soul and merge in the soul.
Therefore the great saints have told us that the true God is the soul. God-Self-Soul-Atman-Brahma are one and the same things, not at all different. The great saints on this earth have told us the same thing which I have described above in few words. Read and think over the following deeply.
"The soul is in itself a most lovely and perfect image of God".
st. John of the Cross
"Atma so parmatma" (Your soul is not different from God" )
Khapti Maharaj
"Your restless search for happiness and God ends with the understanding of the soul i.e. SELF "
Swami Aniljee
"Oh my son Swetketu, the tree is in the seed and the seed is in the tree"
Uddalak Aruni,
Chhandogya Upanishad
"Father is in me, and I am in the Father"
John 10.38
"the Father is God, and the Son is God, for whatever is begotten of God is God."
St. Irenaeus of Lyons.
Now some people would ask the question as to who created the soul. They may get the reply that the soul is created by God. Again there will be a question as to who created God. This chain of questions shall continue and the discussion shall be unending. So, while understanding Self Realization we must agree to whatever the description of soul is given here. We must believe it because it is straight and logical. Anybody can well understand “soul” by the above mentioned simple logic.
This understanding of soul becomes and gets converted into the knowledge of God, with further inquiry into soul with the guidance of the enlightened Guru, who is so powerful that he can induce the knowledge of God into head of the disciple whom he likes.
