Prayers Page 9
Why Prayer?

The knowledge of the Indian seers looks at the prayer (Prarthana) as emotional moments to achieve oneness with God by becoming introvert.

In the opinion of the author, the Vedic inference of prayer is more appropriate than what is described in Wikipedia.

So, the prayers are also primary effort of realizing Self, or in other words, bringing back the memories of our original forms i.e. God or happiness. Prayers therefore, can’t be discarded as useless or nonsense.  Prayer is a mini-meditation.  Apart from it is an earnest request to unknown God, prayer is a most natural way to make a mightier power in one’s favor.  Prayer has given birth to religions, not that religion has created Prayers. Prayers are there since the Stone Age. Prayers are there since the time unknown. Prehistoric man dreaded with the big sounds of the lightening in the sky used to pray God. Australian tribes used to pray and worship some signs on the rock for well being. So prayers are older than religion.  Prayer is the nature of the human being; it is not a gift of any religion or a holy book. Prayer is the way to be one with God.

How the prayers work?

It is beyond doubt that the prayers give the mental preparedness against the possible fear or satisfaction to mind, stressed due to some expectations. Prayer is self created mental defense, and prayer is also self created cool down dose. Prayer is only hope to helpless and unfortunate people like the author whom the world call foolish. Prayer is the only way to extend patience awaiting something to happen, or something to gain. Prayer is the only way that gives satisfaction that we have done something to express gratitude for God. The mechanism of prayer is a secret knowledge and can’t be believed because it can’t be understood by common people. But the author describes it in short for the benefit of the readers. The author requests the readers that what is written here may be taken as an additional knowledge, and not as something against their faith as Hindus or any religion.

God has nothing to do with prayers.  Rather God has nothing to do with what the human being does on this earth.  God is 1.  Witness to what happens (Sakshi), 2. God is live (Chetan) and 3. God is infinity without properties/qualities (Nirguna Nirakar). It is a common misunderstanding in the theist world that God listens to prayers. God has no ears but God powers ears to listen. God does not listen anything. Electricity could make billions of machines run, but electricity is neither machine nor a tool.

Prayer has a Yoga base, because Yoga is the science of body and mind.  Human body has the nine holes.  There is a lot of influx of external things those are sensed by the nine holes. Prayer gradually tries to close the holes for some time while a person makes prayers. The two holes down the waist are automatically closed during prayer and the sexual instincts stopped temporarily.  In some religions, probably in Middle East religions, people are directed to sit on the folded feet. (Squatting -making a Vajrasan) to avoid any subtle external power entering body. This is most scientific way of prayer because this helps one making quick concentration. Two eyes shut down gradually.  Two ears ignore the sound disturbance and become closed.  In some religions, again probably the Middle East religions, people put their fingers in the ears to close the two holes while they pray.  The holes of two nostrils gradually decrease their respiration speed. We can observe that our respiration becomes steady and we need little air to inhale.  The remaining one hole is mouth.  The prayers have the four kinds of expressions. 1. Pashyanti 2. Madhyama 3. Vaikhari 4. Para.  (The readers may get this explained from any meditation teacher. Here we have limited pages, and can’t explain in details). The prayer could be silent or prayer could be loud. The better is silent.  Now the one hole i.e. mouth is kept busy to make concentration on the words.

What are the words that we use in prayers have secondary importance.  The best is that prayer that makes your emotions for God erupt/grow. Anyhow, God does not listen your words. The words in the prayer achieve the emotional proximity with God within, not actual. Indians call the prayer “Aarati”. This means very very earnest words. The important is the stopping of external inflow in to body, and stopping of the thoughts going away from body (Vrittis).  That is why the nine holes are closed during prayer

The question is how the people get healing, or  their desires fulfilled by the prayers if God does not listen to prayers?

As explained many times above that God has nothing to do with the prayers. But surprisingly God helps the people who pray with extreme emotions. Both the things are true. How? The author narrates here a true incidence that took place in 1977 when he was employed in the Bank.  One of his colleagues (friend) was from a rich joint family with more than hundred members in family staying under one roof.  One day his friend came and asked the author to accompany him to Ganesha temple. He was in extreme tension.
