Prayers Page 4
The author remembers the day when he was sitting in front of his Guru, Hon. Khapti Maharaj. There was no conversation for hours together. He saw a big book of commentary on some scripture, lying on the table. Knowing very much that it is insult of Guru to read a knowledge book before him without his permission, the author inadvertently lifted the book and started browsing. Hon. Khapti Maharaj shouted loudly and asked the author,” Why are you reading book? There is nothing in the book. I am here to give you what you want.” The author realized his mistake, apologized to Guru and kept the book away. Any holy book in the world can’t give the knowledge that an enlightened Guru can impart.
This Vedic comprehension about God is very difficult to be understood by the common people. The common people even in those days were ignorant about God like in today’s world. We see the people involved in their personal matters and worldly affairs very deep. Hardly, anybody has time to think about the very basic inquiries like, “Who am I, Why I am born and what I have to do in this world that will be with me even after my death”, Where shall I go after death? What is the power in my own body that makes me understand the world?” etc. The ordinary ignorant brains quickly establish the faith in whatever is easier for them to understand. They do not like to stretch their minds on the unselfish subjects like that of God. They quickly believe in the things like,
1. What could be sensed/understood by them easily and what is miraculous or splendid.
2. What is told to them by religious books and priests.
3. What is read by them which they thought to be miraculous true history.
The Vedic sages had devised a way out considering the fact that the minds of the people were naturally inclined to bodily enjoyments. They knew that the people had made impossible for themselves to concentrate on God. People need some object or some identity of God; viz. a holy book, pilgrim place, a photograph, prayer house, a sign etc. The device the sages tried was very simple, and based on natural inclination of human being. The ancient Indian sages had devised the effigies of God, which the people gladly accepted as God, being an object in front of them. After the Veda Kala (era of knowledge), a new era started in India called the Purana Kala (era of Saguna God). The idols of different Gods were presented to people with millions of miraculous stories. People were given liberty to choose God for them from any hero of the stories. The great epics like Ramayana and Mahabharata were given in the hands of the people, depicting the stories of Rama and Krishna. Almost all the people in India accepted those Gods very easily; not only that, but they made those Gods their real Gods and saviors. Of course, the sages wanted to get only few things done by the people, and the people responded to Saguna God so greatly that they loved the effigies more than their lives.
1.Sages wanted that the people should be afraid of sins.
2.People should have less inclination to worldly life.
3.People should at least for sometime be introvert, looking inside of them.
All the above three things were achieved by Saguna Bhakti. (Devotional way). Hidden behind the Saguna God devotion and the tales of the God, the great sages revealed the truths of life and recommended the disciplines that would make the minds of the people pure. The purity of mind is the first condition to understand the true God, called Nirguna God.
The same Saguna way was followed by most of the religions in different ways all over the world, with the only difference that instead of many effigies of God, one invisible personified God was given to the people as object for concentration.
Indians said one God is omnipotent and incarnated in many shapes and names.
Non Indians said one God is invisible and hears the prayers of people in sky or heaven.
In devotional way important is the emotional acceptance of God as the savior of human being, rest of the things are secondary and could be differed in many ways. Some people will not agree with the above statements, but the truth is that all the mythology in holy books is imaginary and intended to benefit the common people. In non-Indian religions, the two layered arrangement like Saguna God and Nirguna God is not found. However, we can find in vogue everywhere the devotion with some object, like holy book, some signs, some person, some pictures etc.
What are the people of the world after? And why?
Everybody in this world has desires; positive and negative. Every individual wants something to take place concerning him that is good for him, and he wants something not to take place that is bad for him. Billions of people in the world have trillions of desires. Everybody has different desire. Money is the top priority ................................
