7. The Holocaust is a mystery beyond our comprehension. God has reason for what He does, but human understanding can't begin to understand His reason.
8. The Jewish people become in fact the "suffering servant" of Isaiah . The Jewish people collectively suffer for the sins of the world. 9. God does exist, but God is not omnipotent . This view is similar to Process theology and Open Theism . All of the above arguments are based on the assumption that God is omnipotent and, consequently, could have interfered to stop the Holocaust. What if this is not so? In this view, the Holocaust only reflects poorly on humanity, not on God. This is a view promoted by many liberal theologians, including Rabbi Harold Kushner .
10 God or any other supernatural deity does not exist .
Here are the total ten Jew responses and their brief conclusions. These ten views mostly represent the overall opinions of the Jewish community on the Holocaust. The author respects the sentiments and faiths of all. The following responses are the outcome of the sad minds, frustrations, ritual anger and lack of Vedic knowledge. Let us see how the spiritual Indians might look at the responses.
1. It is a tragedy like other tragedies.
Some people think that the Holocaust was tragedy like other major tragedies in the world. Though this statement looks commonly acceptable in the world, we do not get satisfied on some points. (a) How many major tragedies in the world, involving tortures and deaths of millions of people of one race could have stopped by a single person? In case of the Holocaust, only one person could have stopped the Holocaust happenings. (b) How many deliberate massacres of the large number of people have been termed as merely ?tragedy?, before the Holocaust? How many examples of tragedies similar to the Holocaust could be found in the history? Many questions would remain unanswered if we accept it as a simple tragedy. The view, ?the Holocaust is like other tragedies? is neither a theological view nor philosophical. It sounds more like effort of consoling sad hearts and not a logical view.
1918 flu pandemic killed tens of millions of people all over the world. One would not mind calling it a tragedy because it was not manmade. The Holocaust was intentional manmade massacre. So, the first response, which apparently feels convincing does not very much satisfy the thinking mind. The people who have suffered, whose kith and kin were sufferer, will hardly agree to the response that it was the tragedy like other tragedies. Even the people who have read the Holocaust stories and seen photographs would not agree to this point.
2. Jews punished for sins
The second response that the Jews were punished by the God for their sins is again difficult to be accepted. If 6 million Jews were killed for their sins, what about the other 5 millions? They must have also committed the sins similar to that of the Jews. Why God only looked at the sins of Jews, why not at the sins of followers of other faiths? What is the definition of sin? Who decides particular human deed as a ?sin?? A sin in one religion could be worship in other? Jains would call it a sin which many other religions would call ?Sacrifice for God?. This appears like an immature view?
3. It is due to temporary absence of God
The statements like ?temporary absence of God? would invite many questions. How can one determine as to whether the God is present or absent at the given time? Was God absent during WWII and reappeared after the surrender of Japan? Who witnessed His appearance and absence? Where had He gone when He was absent? Are there many more worlds where He went to take rest during war time?
The questions are unending. The religious men in the world with common prudence would not accept this response.
4. God is no longer relevant to humanity
This is again an illogical plea. When you say God is dead, you have to accept that the God was born. If you accept that the God was born, then you must accept that the God was created out of something that had existence before the God. The unending chain of the questions starts and it becomes difficult to find answers. The questions like ?God is dead or alive? are more sentimental and do not help solving the mystery.
